Additional Chief Secretary, Urban Development Department Tushar Girinath said, Rs 4,808 crore is currently being spent on the development of main and sub-main roads and ward roads in the capital city of Bengaluru, and all the road works, except for the white-topping work, will be completed before the start of the monsoon season.

Speaking at a press conference, he said that there are 1682 km of main and sub-main roads in the city, out of which 124 km of road has already been developed in the white-topping model. Now, 157 km of white-topping work has been started at a cost of Rs. 1700 crore. Road asphalting of 392 km is in progress at a cost of Rs. 694 crore. It has been decided to asphalt the ward roads at a cost of Rs. 1,241 crore, and Rs. 900 crore under the Chief Minister’s grant.

Work is underway at a cost of Rs 273 crore for the development of 78 km of the high-density corridor, where IT and BT companies are located. Overall, Rs 4,808 crore is being spent on the development of existing roads in the city, he explained.

The asphalting works will be completed before the coming March-April. Of the white-topping work, about 34 km of the road has already been completed and vehicular traffic has been allowed. Work is in progress on a 30 km long road, and the overall work will be completed by September 2026, he said.

It was decided to develop MG Road, which has the highest traffic volume, in a white-topping model. However, due to the high traffic volume, the traffic police are not allowing it. Therefore, they said, they are considering asphalting it.

No expenditure has been made for the development of main and sub-main roads for the last six or seven years. Expenditure is being made now. Ward roads are being asphalted. In the coming days, there will be no more pothole problems like the ones seen during the last rainy season. To be completely pothole-free, garbage disposal, water supply pipe system, and water supply system will have to be in place. That system does not exist at present, Tushar Girinath replied to a question.
