Guwahati
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday paid heartfelt tributes to the Indian Navy on the occasion of Navy Day, lauding the force for its bravery, discipline and unwavering dedication to protecting the nation’s maritime interests.

In a message posted on X, the Chief Minister wrote: On #NavyDay, we salute the courage, discipline and unmatched commitment of our Naval warriors who keep India’s seas safe, strong and sovereign. From our vast coastline to the farthest oceans, our Nation stands proud of their unwavering service and sacrifice. His message resonated with the sentiments across the nation as people expressed pride and gratitude for the Navy’s role in ensuring maritime security and national sovereignty.

Navy Day, observed annually on December 4, marks the commemoration of Operation Trident — a daring naval operation carried out by the Indian Navy during the 1971 Indo-Pak war. On the night of December 4, Indian missile boats launched a surprise attack on Karachi harbour, causing extensive damage to Pakistan’s naval infrastructure and establishing one of India’s most significant maritime victories. The day has since served as a reminder of the Navy’s valour and strategic capability.

Over the years, the Indian Navy has evolved into a formidable blue-water force capable of operating across vast maritime zones. Its duties extend beyond safeguarding the 7,500-km coastline to protecting island territories, securing vital sea lanes of communication and fostering international maritime cooperation through joint exercises and defence partnerships.

The Navy also plays a crucial role in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations, responding swiftly to cyclones, tsunamis and emergencies within India and abroad.

In recent times, the Navy has accelerated its indigenisation efforts under the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative, with advanced warships, submarines and maritime systems being developed in Indian shipyards.
