Gandhi Bazaar footpath cleared of encroachments

BENGALURU

The Bengaluru Central Municipal Corporation carried out a major operation today to clear long-standing footpath encroachments in the Gandhi Bazaar area of Chikkapet division.

Commissioner Rajendra Cholan said the action was taken after several warnings were issued to street vendors who continued to occupy unauthorized spaces, creating difficulties for pedestrians.

Officials explained that around 120 street vendors had already been given proper locations to run their stalls. These designated spots were meant to help them continue their business without blocking public pathways. However, many vendors had expanded into additional areas beyond the allotted spaces, leading to congestion and safety concerns for people walking through the busy stretch.

As the vendors did not follow repeated instructions to vacate the extra spaces, the Corporation launched a clearance drive early this morning. A team led by Chikkapet Executive Engineer Pradeep Kumar removed the unauthorized structures and restored the footpath area. The operation involved two JCBs, seven tractors, three lorries and about 40 personnel. During the drive, five shops that had extended their business onto the footpath were also cleared.

Officials stated that such actions were necessary to ensure smooth movement for thousands of pedestrians who use the Gandhi Bazaar roads daily. They added that street vending can continue without disruption if vendors operate strictly within their assigned areas.

The Corporation has now warned that legal action will be taken against anyone who again encroaches on the footpaths or trades outside approved zones.

Assistant Executive Engineers Krishnakumar and Ramegowda, marshals and several staff members were present during the operation, ensuring that the clearance was carried out smoothly and safely for everyone involved.
