LS clears move to elect IISc council members

Bengaluru

The Lok Sabha on Monday approved a resolution to elect two members of the House to the Council of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru. The resolution was moved by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan during the Winter Session. Despite ongoing protests related to the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in 12 states and Union Territories, the motion was adopted through a voice vote.

Pradhan said the election of two Lok Sabha members will strengthen the governance of IISc, which is India’s top science education and research institution. The IISc Council plays an important role in guiding the institution’s administration, planning, and long-term development. It works to improve infrastructure, research capabilities, and global partnerships.

The Council includes representatives from the Central Government, the Karnataka Government, Tata Trusts, UGC, AICTE, the Association of Indian Universities, and members from both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. With the approval of this resolution, the process to elect two new members from the House can now begin.

The decision is expected to help IISc continue expanding its academic strength and global presence. Pradhan noted that the inclusion of elected members ensures that Parliament stays connected with the institute’s progress and future needs. The move is seen as a step toward improving coordination between policymakers and premier educational institutions in the country.

By enhancing representation and strengthening the council, the government aims to support IISc’s efforts toward innovation, high-quality research, and international collaboration.
