Bengaluru shivers in December drizzles

Cooling down

Bengaluru

Bengaluru is set for cooler days ahead as the city experiences a notable dip in temperatures, with light to moderate rain expected through the first week of December. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) attributed the change to Cyclone Ditwah over the Bay of Bengal.

The IMD forecast generally cloudy skies until Tuesday, accompanied by mist in some areas during early mornings. Maximum temperatures are expected to hover around 21–22°C, nearly six degrees below the seasonal average of 26.9°C. Nighttime lows are predicted at 18°C, slightly above the 15-year December average of 16.4°C. On Sunday, Bengaluru recorded a maximum of 21.6°C and a minimum of 18.4°C, both below normal.

Light rain with sustained winds of 30–40 kmph is likely on Monday, with similar weather conditions persisting for the rest of the week. While Cyclone Ditwah caused severe devastation in Sri Lanka, it weakened into a depression near India without making landfall.

Since November 27, the city’s temperatures have dropped 2–6 degrees below normal due to cyclonic conditions in the Bay of Bengal. Historically, Bengaluru’s lowest December temperature over the last 15 years was 12.8°C on December 24, 2011, and the city’s all-time low remains 7.8°C recorded on January 13, 1884.

Residents are advised to carry umbrellas and wear warm clothing, as the unusual chill and intermittent rains are likely to continue, affecting daily life and travel. The weather shift offers a welcome break from Bengaluru’s usual warmth but calls for caution during wet and misty mornings.
