Rohit Sharma Smashes ODI Sixes World Record, Overtakes Shahid Afridi

Rohit Sharma creates history in Ranchi, surpassing Shahid Afridi’s longstanding ODI sixes record

Ranchi

Rohit Sharma added another monumental feat to his illustrious career by breaking the world record for the most sixes in One-Day Internationals. The landmark came during the first ODI against South Africa at the JSCA International Stadium in Ranchi, where Rohit struck three towering sixes to move past Pakistan legend Shahid Afridi’s tally of 351.

Needing exactly three sixes to claim the world record, Rohit equalled Afridi with back-to-back hits off Prenelan Subrayen in the 15th over. Moments later, he launched a signature pull shot over fine leg off Marco Jansen to take his sixes tally to 352, rewriting the record books. The India skipper already holds the record for most sixes in T20Is (205) and now boasts 88 sixes in Tests, taking his cumulative international sixes tally to 642 — another world record.

Rohit also notched up his 60th ODI fifty during the innings. After a cautious start and an early reprieve when Tony de Zorzi dropped him at deep square leg, Rohit shifted gears smoothly. He unfurled crisp boundaries off Jansen and built a commanding 136-run stand with Virat Kohli for the second wicket, their second century partnership in successive ODIs. Rohit’s half-century came off 47 deliveries, featuring five fours and three sixes, before he was trapped lbw by Jansen for 57 off 51 balls.

His record-breaking feat further cements his legacy as one of cricket’s greatest stroke-makers, particularly renowned for his effortless power-hitting and dominance across formats.
