Farmers in Yelaburga gathered in protest on Sunday, demanding a proper support price for maize. BJP leaders joined the demonstration, accusing the state government of ignoring the struggles of farmers. Former minister Halappa Achar said the Congress government, led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, has failed to protect farmers’ interests at a time when they are facing severe hardship.
He argued that the government has drained the state treasury through unnecessary spending and is now unable to support farmers with fair crop prices. Many farmers are upset that the maize they have grown is not fetching a reasonable rate, leaving them in financial difficulty.
During the protest, BJP Mandal President Maruthi Hosamani and leaders Basavalingappa Bhuthe, Veeranna Hubballi, Suresh Gowda Shivana Gowda, and Hanchyalappa Talavara addressed the gathering. They said farmers work hard throughout the year, and it is the government’s duty to ensure they receive fair compensation for their produce.
Speakers C.H. Police Patil and Shivaleela Dalvai also criticized the government for what they called poor handling of agricultural issues. They stressed the need for an immediate decision on a support price to prevent further loss to farmers.
Several leaders, including Shivakumar, Kallappa Karamudi, Basavaraja, Guruguli, and Shivappa Vaadi, participated along with a large number of local farmers. The protest ended with a renewed call to the government to take quick action and announce a fair support price for maize, helping farmers overcome their current financial stress.
