Mick Schumacher, son of seven-time Formula One champion Michael Schumacher, is set to race in the U.S. next year after signing with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing (RLL) for the 2026 IndyCar season. The 26-year-old German, who has spent the last two years competing with Alpine in the World Endurance Championship (WEC), will now tackle America’s iconic ovals and road courses, including the Indianapolis 500.
Schumacher lost his F1 seat with Haas at the end of 2022 and has since built experience in endurance racing, giving him a diverse motorsport background. With six of IndyCar’s 17 races held on ovals or super-speedways, RLL has already planned an oval test to help Schumacher adapt to the high-speed, banked circuits that are a hallmark of American open-wheel racing.
“Having both an F1 and endurance background, and having competed in various racing series over the years, I have insights and knowledge that I am sure will contribute to a great partnership,” Schumacher said. “I was also immediately excited about the car and the American way of motorsport, which is more about pure and direct racing, and it is precisely this aspect that I am very much looking forward to.”
RLL co-owner Bobby Rahal praised Schumacher’s performance during a test on the Indianapolis road course. “He impressed every single team member. Everyone walked away from that event determined to do what we could to bring Mick into our program,” Rahal said, highlighting Schumacher’s adaptability and potential to make an impact in IndyCar.
The 2026 IndyCar season is scheduled to start on March 1, marking Schumacher’s first full season in American open-wheel racing. His move adds a high-profile name to the series and brings added global attention to IndyCar, while also offering the German driver a new challenge in a competitive and fast-paced racing environment.
