NIJALINGAPPA’S HOUSE RENOVATION
Chitradurga
District Collector T. Venkatesh inspected the ongoing renovation work at the historic residence of former Chief Minister S. Nijalingappa, known as the ‘Vinaya’ building, in Chitradurga city. The restoration, estimated at Rs. 1.20 crore, is being carried out with a traditional touch, ensuring that the original architectural style remains intact.
The government has already acquired the property, and the renovation aims to preserve its heritage while making it accessible for public viewing. Family members of S. Nijalingappa have extended their full cooperation for the project. The renovation plan has been prepared in consultation with the State Archaeology Department and the Construction Centre, with technical guidance to maintain authenticity. The work includes replastering, flooring, and electrical upgrades, adhering to traditional construction methods.
Collector Venkatesh stated that the building was originally constructed using a mixture of lime, jaggery, and aloe vera, combined with clay. Replicating these materials requires meticulous planning and more time, which is why the renovation is expected to take 5 to 6 months. A committee, including Nijalingappa’s descendants, is overseeing the project to ensure fidelity to the original design.
Recently, Shivraj Tangadagi, Minister for Kannada and Culture, visited the site, providing guidance on the restoration and promising additional funding if necessary. So far, Rs. 84 lakh has been released, and a formal request for supplementary funds will be submitted following review of the progress report.
Officials present during the inspection included Harish Kumar, Project Director of the Construction Centre, and Assistant Engineer Ravi, among others. Collector Venkatesh emphasized that the project must retain the building’s traditional appearance while completing the renovation to the highest standards.
