India’s Television Viewership Surges Across Nation

New Delhi

India’s television landscape now reaches 900 million viewers across 230 million households, with 918 private satellite channels operational as of March 2025, official data revealed on Friday to mark World Television Day. The growth reflects a thriving broadcast ecosystem, supported by 6.5 crore DD Free Dish homes, which provide free public access and drive digital inclusion nationwide.

The Media and Entertainment sector contributed Rs 2.5 lakh crore to India’s economy in 2024, with projections exceeding Rs 3 lakh crore by 2027. The television and broadcasting segment alone earned nearly Rs 680 billion in 2024. Expansion is driven by Smart TVs, 4K and high-definition broadcasting, 5G, and OTT platforms serving over 600 million users.

World Television Day, observed globally on November 21, recognises television as a key medium for information, education, and global understanding. In India, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and Prasar Bharati oversee programmes highlighting TV’s role in public service, development messaging, and national integration.

Television in India has evolved since its launch in 1959, from experimental broadcasts to one of the world’s largest networks. Key milestones include the introduction of colour TV in 1982 and expansion of DD Free Dish from 59 channels in 2014 to 482 channels in 2025, enhancing access to regional, national, and educational content.

Modern developments like AI-enabled tools, multilingual content, and interactive programming ensure TV remains inclusive, bridging cultural, linguistic, and digital divides. Supported by government initiatives, television continues to inform, connect, and empower citizens, reinforcing its role as a cornerstone of national communication.
