Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Friday said India and Singapore are deepening cooperation in advanced technologies, particularly semiconductors, following a series of high-level meetings in Singapore. The Singapore Semiconductor Industry Association (SSIA) will work closely with India to support approved semiconductor projects, the minister noted.
Vaishnaw added that discussions were held with Singapore-based companies to understand their experiences, challenges, and steps required to accelerate the movement of semiconductor equipment and materials. “Detailed discussions were held on key challenges and measures to speed up equipment and material movement,” he said.
The minister also met officials from Singapore’s Ministry of Trade and Industry, Enterprise Singapore, the Institute of Technical Education, Singapore Polytechnic, and ASTAR. The talks focused on training technicians and engineers needed for India’s upcoming semiconductor facilities. Vaishnaw highlighted that skilling initiatives will be crucial to meet workforce demands in India’s growing chip industry.
In addition, Vaishnaw met Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister and Trade & Industry Minister Gan Kim Yong to explore ways to expand bilateral cooperation in emerging technology sectors. He emphasized that collaboration in high-tech areas will benefit both countries and strengthen India’s semiconductor ecosystem. Global semiconductor distributor Avnet has expressed commitment to expand its warehousing and electronics operations in India, enhancing supply chain support as the country accelerates chip manufacturing. “Avnet is an important semiconductor and electronics warehousing company. They are committed to expanding operations in India,” the minister said.
These steps are expected to bolster India’s semiconductor ambitions, develop skilled talent, and create a robust infrastructure, positioning the country as a key player in the global chip industry.
