District Collector Dr. Vijayamahantesh Danammanavar visited the Haveri District Hospital on Thursday to review CCTV footage linked to the death of a newborn in the Women and Children’s Health Hospital. The incident has gained statewide attention following complaints from Mahila Yoga, the State High Court and the Child Protection Commission.
An investigation team was formed, and members began examining CCTV footage and hospital documents. The DC spent nearly an hour reviewing the footage and also spoke directly to the pregnant woman involved. He said the visit followed instructions from the Women’s Commission and Child Rights Commission, which have sought a detailed report from the Health Department.
Dr. Danammanavar inspected the maternity ward and corridor where the incident occurred. He said that the Health Department has been directed to conduct an inquiry as per rules, identify those responsible and take necessary action. A report is expected by the end of the day, as the district administration must submit findings to both the Commission and the High Court.
The DC said the woman claimed she did not receive proper care during delivery but confirmed that her health condition is currently stable. He instructed officials to provide a clear timeline of when the woman arrived at the hospital and what occurred afterward. The inquiry team includes the Haveri Deputy Divisional Officer, Deputy Director of Women and Child Welfare, HIMS Principal and members of the Women’s Comfort Center.
Incident Background: On Tuesday, 30-year-old Roopa Girish Karabannavara of Kakol village in Ranebennur taluk arrived at the district hospital around 9 am. Her relatives alleged that despite severe labor pain, Roopa was denied a bed and made to sit on the floor. They also claimed that hospital staff failed to guide her properly. When she later attempted to go to the toilet, Roopa delivered the baby on the way, and the newborn died from injuries. Relatives blamed the tragedy on negligence by doctors and nurses.
