Chitradurga’s water success stems from rainwater harvesting, NREGA projects, lakes, canals, check dams, and sustainable groundwater improvements
CHITRADURGA
Chitradurga district has been honoured with the prestigious “Jala Sanchay – Jana Bhagidhari” (GSJB) National Award for its outstanding water conservation initiatives under the Zilla Panchayat. The award, presented by the Union Jal Shakti Ministry, recognises the district’s exemplary efforts in groundwater augmentation and sustainable water management.
The award ceremony was held in New Delhi in the presence of President Droupadi Murmu and Minister of State for Jal Shakti V. Somanna. The accolade was received by Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Dr. S. Akash from Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil. Along with the recognition, the district received a cash prize of ₹25 lakh.
Chitradurga’s success is attributed to a series of measures focusing on rainwater harvesting, ditching, lake dredging, embankment strengthening, canal development, check dams, and ingu gundi construction. Under the NREGA scheme, 7,815 projects were implemented across 1,063 villages during 2024–25, significantly improving groundwater levels and ensuring sustainable water availability for agriculture and daily use.
The district administration highlighted the importance of community participation in the campaign, engaging local residents actively in water conservation works. Officials noted that prioritising water protection and resource management has made a lasting impact on the region’s ecology and agricultural productivity.
The national recognition not only brings prestige to Chitradurga but also sets an example for other districts to follow in promoting participatory water management and sustainable resource practices.
