Kumar Sangakkara Returns as Rajasthan Royals Head Coach for IPL 2026

Rajasthan Royals reappoint Kumar Sangakkara head coach as team undergoes major overhaul

New Delhi

Rajasthan Royals on Monday confirmed the return of Sri Lankan great Kumar Sangakkara as their head coach for the 2026 Indian Premier League season, marking a renewed phase for the franchise after a disappointing 2025 campaign. Sangakkara, who has served as the team’s Director of Cricket since 2021, previously held the head coach role from 2021 to 2024 and now steps back into the position following Rahul Dravid’s exit.

Dravid’s second stint with the Royals came to an abrupt close in August despite signing a multi-year contract. His departure followed a “structural review” of the team’s underwhelming performance in the 2025 season, where they finished ninth with just four wins from 14 matches. The management’s decision to reinstate Sangakkara reflects a move toward stability and continuity as they attempt to rebuild.

The coaching reshuffle comes amid significant changes in the squad. The Royals recently traded long-time wicketkeeper-batter and former captain Sanju Samson to Chennai Super Kings, receiving Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran in a high-profile exchange. The trade marks one of the most notable off-season moves ahead of the 2026 tournament, signalling a bold overhaul of the Royals’ core group.

Ahead of the mini auction scheduled for December 16 in Abu Dhabi, Rajasthan also released seven players, including overseas names Maheesh Theekshana, Wanindu Hasaranga and Fazalhaq Farooqi. Domestic players Akash Madhwal, Ashok Sharma, Kumar Kartikeya Singh and Kunal Rathore were also let go as the franchise opens space for fresh talent.

With Sangakkara at the helm again, the Royals are aiming to revive their fortunes and craft a more competitive unit for the upcoming season. His dual role as Director of Cricket and head coach is expected to provide strategic cohesion as the team navigates its major transition.
