Pedestrians edged out as bikers take over footpath

Pedestrian safety has become a growing concern along the ISRO Junction to Manipal Hospital stretch on HAL Main Road, as an increasing number of two-wheeler riders are using the footpath as an alternate lane to avoid traffic congestion.
The issue, observed during both morning and evening peak hours, has caused severe inconvenience to office-goers, hospital visitors, and nearby residents. The narrow footpaths, meant exclusively for pedestrians, are now frequently occupied by motorcycles maneuvering through the crowd, forcing walkers to step onto the main carriageway and risk accidents.
Commuters and local employees have voiced strong concern over the lack of enforcement in the area. “It has become almost impossible to walk safely. Many patients and elderly visitors to the hospital face great difficulty navigating the stretch,” said a commuter working near ISRO Junction.
Residents have appealed to the Bengaluru Traffic Police and authorities concerned to take immediate action. Their suggestions include the installation of bollards along the footpath, deployment of traffic marshals, and strict penalties for violators.
Experts emphasize that protecting pedestrian rights is crucial in a city struggling with rising vehicular density. Regular monitoring and dedicated enforcement, they say, can help restore safety and discipline on this important road link connecting key institutions and residential areas.
Authorities are expected to take note of the situation and implement measures to ensure that the footpath serves its rightful purpose a safe and unobstructed passage for pedestrians.
