Berlin
Bayern Munich’s perfect start to the season came to an end as Union Berlin held the German champions to a thrilling 2-2 draw in the Bundesliga, snapping their record 16-game winning streak across competitions.
Dutch defender Danilho Doekhi was Union’s hero, scoring twice to stun Vincent Kompany’s Bayern, who needed a stoppage-time equalizer from Harry Kane to salvage a point. “We won a point today. At Bayern, when you don’t win, you lose two points — but the mentality in the 92nd minute matters,” Kompany said, reflecting on his team’s late escape.
Union started brighter and had a goal by Ilyas Ansah ruled out for offside after a VAR review. The hosts were rewarded in the 27th minute when Janik Haberer’s low corner caught Bayern’s defense off guard and Doekhi swept home from close range.
Bayern responded through Luis Díaz, who showed superb control and precision to equalize from a tight angle in the 38th minute. Union, however, refused to wilt. In the 83rd minute, Doekhi pounced again — chesting down Kane’s failed clearance and prodding past Manuel Neuer to send the home fans into raptures at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei.
Kane made amends in stoppage time, heading home to secure a 2-2 draw that preserved Bayern’s unbeaten record but ended their winning run one short of equaling their 2015 Bundesliga start of ten straight league victories.
Elsewhere, Borussia Mönchengladbach beat Cologne 3-1 in the Rhine derby, Hamburger SV held Borussia Dortmund 1-1, and Hoffenheim stunned Leipzig 3-1, while Bayer Leverkusen crushed Heidenheim 6-0.
