Northeast not just a frontier, but nation’s forward face: Modi

New Delhi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday lauded India’s Northeast region, describing it as not just the country’s frontier but its forward face.

Responding to an article penned by Union Minister Jyotiraditya M Scindia, the Prime Minister highlighted the transformative progress and resilience of the people in the region.

In this insightful article, Union Minister JM Scindia shares his experience of visiting the North East, describing its beauty and the indomitable spirit of its people, PM Modi posted on X.

He further observed that Scindia’s piece captures how the region, often referred to as Ashtalakshmi, is evolving into India’s natural gateway to Southeast Asia.

Scindia, recounting his visit to Assam and Meghalaya, said he was deeply moved and profoundly inspired by the people’s warmth and determination. The breathtaking beauty of the Northeast is matched only by the simplicity and indomitable spirit of its people. I return home with renewed resolve to work harder for the region’s progress and prosperity, he said.

Underlining the Modi government’s focus on regional development, Scindia noted that the Northeast is being transformed into a vibrant centre of connectivity, culture, and commerce. He credited the Prime Minister’s farsighted vision for turning long-standing challenges into opportunities, enabling a resurgence of hope and growth across the region.

Highlighting the shift from a landlocked to a land-linked region, the minister said the Northeast now exemplifies inclusive and dignified development. During his visit to Meghalaya, Scindia toured the Mushroom Development Centre in Upper Shillong, which has been leading a quiet revolution in rural livelihoods.

Established in 1982 under the North Eastern Council, the centre now produces around 1.5 lakh sawdust blocks annually—each yielding a kilogram of high-value shiitake mushrooms worth up to ₹1,000—boosting rural incomes and local entrepreneurship.
