Lawmakers urge immediate renovation of KC valley canal

Srinivaspur

Legislator G.K. Venkateshiva Reddy has strongly urged the immediate renovation of the KC Valley water canal, describing the ongoing works as unscientific and responsible for flooding farmlands. On Sunday, he inspected waterlogged lands in Kuduvanahalli village within the Srinivaspur assembly constituency and addressed a public meeting afterward.

He emphasized that the canal from S. Agrahara and Muduvadi lake to Manighatta needs an eight-foot-high embankment and a thirty-foot width to ensure smooth water flow. Venkateshiva Reddy spoke with the Principal Secretary of the Minor Irrigation Department over the phone, who assured a site visit and swift measures to compensate affected farmers.

Reddy criticized the Congress government for allocating only half of the promised Rs. 50 crore for local development, resulting in legal interventions. He stressed that full funding is essential to provide necessary infrastructure to every village.

MP M. Mallesh Babu noted that lands affected by KC Valley water were inspected and confirmed damage due to a poorly maintained canal. He added that the second-phase project has design flaws, worsening flooding during heavy rains.

JDS leader C.M.R. Srinath echoed the concerns, highlighting that the absence of proper cleaning and maintenance before water release has caused enormous crop losses. Contaminated water is affecting humans, livestock, birds, and insects, resulting in diseases and reduced yields. He demanded the canal be scientifically cleared and repaired.

Venkateshiva Reddy assured that damaged roads in the region would be repaired within three months. Local leaders and community representatives, including Sheshapur Gopal, B. Krishnareddy, and Rakesh, joined the inspection and public meeting, reinforcing demands for urgent action to restore the canal and protect farmers’ livelihoods.

The inspection and review underscored the critical need for timely intervention, proper maintenance, and scientific management of the KC Valley canal to prevent further agricultural and environmental damage.
