India captain Harmanpreet Kaur reflects on her journey from childhood dreams to World Cup glory.
New Delhi
From holding her father’s oversized cricket bat as a child to lifting India’s maiden ICC Women’s World Cup trophy, Harmanpreet Kaur’s story is one of resilience, self-belief, and unshakable dreams.
“Never stop dreaming. You never know where your destiny will take you,” Harmanpreet said after India’s 52-run victory over South Africa in the final at Navi Mumbai. The skipper, who led with grace and grit, shared how her cricketing dream began in childhood. “We used to play with a bat from my dad’s kit bag. It was too big, but one day he cut it down for me,” she recalled in a BCCI video.
That small gesture ignited a passion that would one day unite a nation in celebration. “As a young girl, I didn’t even know women’s cricket existed. But I always dreamt of wearing the blue jersey and bringing change,” she said.
For Harmanpreet, the victory is more than a sporting triumph — it’s a spiritual fulfilment. “It feels magical. Everything just fell into place. I’m humbled and grateful to God for this moment,” the 36-year-old said, her voice filled with emotion.
Reflecting on the heartbreak of the 2017 final loss to England, she credited fans for keeping their belief alive. “That welcome after 2017 showed us the whole country was waiting for women’s cricket to shine,” she said.
As India celebrates, Harmanpreet’s words echo across generations — a reminder that dreams, however distant, can shape destiny when pursued with heart and hope.
