Mangaluru
Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) Dakshina Kannada District President C. Abdul Rahiman has urged the Karnataka government to grandly celebrate Tipu Sultan’s birth anniversary on November 10, calling him a patriot and a symbol of communal harmony who sacrificed his life fighting the British.
Addressing a press conference at the Mangaluru Press Club on Tuesday, Rahiman said that Tipu Sultan’s contributions should be included in school textbooks and that the government should institute awards in his name for individuals who have made significant contributions to the state. He stressed that programmes should be organized to ensure Tipu Sultan’s legacy is remembered permanently. Warning the Congress government, he said, “If the state neglects this demand, it will face serious political consequences in the next Assembly elections.”
IUML Vice President Muhammad Ismail questioned Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, saying that while universities have been named after Kanakadasa, Devaraj Urs, Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar, and Basavanna, Tipu Sultan has been unfairly excluded despite being a champion of justice and equality.
He called upon Speaker U.T. Khader, Minister Zameer Ahmad Khan, and other Muslim leaders to resign and lead a movement in support of Tipu Sultan if the government fails to meet their demand.
District Treasurer Riyaz Harekal, members K.S. Abdul Khader, Abdul Rahman Kandak, and Muhammad B.A. were also present at the press meet.
