Fix Sugarcane Price Immediately to End Farmer Protests, Says Parameshwara

Resolving Farmers’ Problems

BENGALURU:
Home Minister Dr G. Parameshwara on Tuesday assured that the state government has directed officials to fix the sugarcane price at the earliest to address the ongoing farmers’ agitation in Belagavi.

Speaking to reporters, Parameshwara said he had held detailed discussions with Agriculture Minister Shivanand Patil regarding the protests and stressed that the price issue must be resolved quickly to prevent the situation from escalating. “If the matter is not addressed immediately, it will become difficult for the police to handle the crowd,” he cautioned.

The minister said Satish Jarkiholi and other ministers from the region had promised to mediate and resolve the matter. Referring to Monday’s disturbing incident where a farmer attempted suicide during the protest, he said police had intervened in time to save the individual. “Such incidents should never happen again,” he added.

Taking a dig at the opposition, Parameshwara accused the BJP of politicising the farmers’ protest. “The BJP has supported the protest for its political benefit. They are blaming the government for internal issues, but they should recall what happened when they were in power,” he remarked.

On the issue of the cabinet reshuffle, the Home Minister clarified that the decision rests entirely with the Congress high command. “We all respect and follow the high command’s decisions. Action will be taken against those who defy them,” he said, echoing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s stance.

Commenting on the recent assault on a domestic worker in Varthur, Parameshwara said he had sought a detailed report from the Police Commissioner. “Once the report is received, we will review it and take appropriate action against the concerned police personnel if necessary,” he assured.
