BEIJING
Chinese President Xi Jinping met Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin in Beijing on Tuesday, calling for deeper investment and cooperation between the two nations. Xi emphasized that despite “turbulent” global conditions, China and Russia remain committed to strengthening their partnership.
During the talks at the Great Hall of the People, Xi said relations between China and Russia continue to progress toward “higher-level and higher-quality development.” He called it a strategic choice for both sides to safeguard and expand their cooperation. Xi highlighted key areas for growth, including energy, agriculture, aerospace, digital technology, and green development.
Mishustin agreed that both countries should create better conditions to attract investments and support major joint projects. His visit comes as Russia faces Western sanctions over its war in Ukraine and seeks to offset economic challenges through closer ties with China.
Since the “no-limits” partnership signed by Xi and Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2022, trade between the two countries has reached record levels, especially in energy and finance. However, commerce has slowed recently as Beijing faces growing U.S. pressure. Chinese state oil companies have also paused purchases of Russian seaborne oil due to U.S. sanctions on major Russian firms Rosneft and Lukoil.
A joint statement released Tuesday said both countries will “strengthen cooperation in all areas” and face external challenges together. Russia also reaffirmed its support for China’s “one-China” policy and opposition to Taiwan’s independence, reinforcing their shared strategic alignment.
