Pigeon Problem
BENGALURU
Former Minister and Rajajinagar BJP MLA Suresh Kumar has raised alarm over the unchecked increase in the pigeon population across Bengaluru, citing a link between the growing number of birds and rising cases of lung-related ailments among residents.
In a letter to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), Kumar urged officials to take appropriate measures to curb the menace without harming public sentiment. He noted that while many donors generously provide grains to pigeons in parks and open spaces, this has unintentionally led to overbreeding and health hazards.
“Several medical reports published in the media have highlighted how the excessive pigeon population is causing respiratory issues among citizens. People who walk and exercise in parks have personally approached me expressing their concerns,” Kumar wrote.
He requested the civic body to make a policy-level decision to manage the issue in a humane and health-conscious manner, ensuring that citizens’ well-being remains the priority.
Medical experts have long warned that pigeon droppings contain harmful microorganisms, including fungi such as Cryptococcus and Histoplasma, and several bacteria and viruses. These pathogens contaminate soil, water, and air, especially when dried droppings turn into dust that can be inhaled.
Doctors say individuals with weakened immune systems, children, and senior citizens are at particular risk of developing allergies, respiratory infections, and even meningitis due to prolonged exposure.
Kumar cited a study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which confirmed that pigeons can spread diseases and cause serious health complications in humans.
He urged the BBMP to act swiftly and decisively, emphasizing that citizens’ health must not be compromised by uncontrolled pigeon feeding and breeding.
