State-Level Mallakamba Games inspire young athletes: H.K. Patil

Gadag

The state-level Mallakamba Games were inaugurated on Sunday at the K.H. Patil District Stadium in Gadag, in an event organized jointly by the district administration, Zilla Panchayat, and the School Education Department. District In-charge Minister H.K. Patil highlighted the significance of Mallakamba, describing it as “an ancient Indian sport that is gaining renewed importance in recent times.”

Addressing the athletes and audience, Minister Patil emphasized the role of the School Education Department, saying that the Deputy Director and staff should ensure all facilities are provided to help participants perform their best. Legislative Council MLA S.V. Sankanura praised Gadag district for its national-level achievements in sports, music, and other fields. “Athletes from this district have brought laurels in hockey, cycling, and wrestling competitions,” he noted.

Sankanura expressed concern that despite its heritage, Mallakamba has yet to feature in the Asian Games or Olympics. “We need to evaluate whether this is due to government, political, or administrative inaction. While Khelo India has promoted sports, cricket and football still dominate,” he said. He urged collaboration between the state and central governments to popularize Mallakamba nationwide and recommended appointing physical education teachers at all school and college levels.

Deputy Commissioner C.N. Sridhar highlighted the sport’s benefits, stating, “Mallakamba develops physical and mental balance, instilling self-confidence in children. Sports like this must become part of the curriculum.”

This year, 310 athletes from 20 districts participated in the competition. Sridhar underscored that “winning or losing is secondary; participation with a sportsmanlike spirit is most important.”

The event featured speeches by DDPI R.S. Buradi and M.A. Yaragudi, with BEO V.V. Naduvinamani proposing the vote of thanks. Prominent attendees included Basavaraj Bellary, president of the Karnataka State Government Employees Association district unit, and leaders of teacher associations, including B.F. Poojara, M.K. Lamani, and others.

The games reflect Karnataka’s commitment to reviving traditional sports while encouraging youth to cultivate discipline, balance, and a spirit of healthy competition.
