Spotlight on Suryakumar’s Struggles as India Clash with Aus in T20Is

Under-fire captain Suryakumar Yadav seeks return to form as India face tough Australian challenge.

All eyes are on skipper Suryakumar Yadav, whose prolonged slump with the bat has raised concerns ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. The team, led by Gautam Gambhir, hopes to carry the momentum from their Asia Cup triumph into the series, but Yadav’s recent form remains a talking point.

The flamboyant batter has struggled for runs this year, managing just 100 runs in 12 innings, including 72 in seven matches during the Asia Cup. Former India wicket-keeper Parthiv Patel stressed the need for Yadav to rediscover his rhythm. “It is important that Surya finds form. If he gets runs, he can destroy any opposition. His return to form will be vital for the team,” Patel said during a media interaction facilitated by JioStar on Tuesday.

Head coach Gautam Gambhir has defended his captain, reiterating that India’s aggressive style of cricket inherently carries risks. However, with Australia presenting tougher conditions, a turnaround in form will be crucial for Yadav’s confidence and leadership.

Vice-captain Shubman Gill also finds himself under the spotlight, having scored only 127 runs in seven T20I innings this year. Patel, who works with Gill at Gujarat Titans, expressed faith in his ability to deliver. “He has shown great leadership and consistency in the IPL. It’s important we back players currently in the setup,” he said.

The Indian squad has been training in Canberra for several days to adapt to local conditions. As the series begins, Yadav’s performances could set the tone for India’s overseas assignments against South Africa and New Zealand, shaping their build-up to the 2026 T20 World Cup.
