Niti Aayog unveils India’s roadmap to global leadership in frontier techs

It envisions advanced technologies driving India’s manufacturing to 25% of GDP and creating 100 million jobs.

Harnessing frontier technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Advanced Materials, Digital Twins, and Robotics could enable India’s manufacturing sector to contribute over 25 per cent to the country’s GDP and create more than 100 million jobs by 2035, according to a new report by NITI Aayog. The report, titled Reimagining Manufacturing: India’s Roadmap to Global Leadership in Advanced Manufacturing, outlines how India can become one of the world’s top three hubs for advanced manufacturing by 2035, aligning with the broader vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.

The roadmap was launched by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, and NITI Aayog CEO B.V.R. Subrahmanyam at an event in Pune. It identifies AI and Machine Learning, Advanced Materials, Digital Twins, and Robotics as high-impact enablers across 13 priority sectors, emphasizing their potential to reshape productivity, resilience, and sustainability in manufacturing.

Fadnavis lauded NITI Aayog for preparing a visionary roadmap and expressed Maharashtra’s commitment to lead this technological transformation. Maharashtra will be the first state to fully align with the National Mission on Manufacturing and become a global hub for advanced manufacturing, he stated.

Highlighting the urgency for rapid innovation, Subrahmanyam said, India’s economic ascent hinges on the strength of its manufacturing sector, but incremental change will not suffice. This roadmap sets a decisive, time-bound course to become an advanced manufacturing powerhouse by 2035.

The report also warned that failing to adopt these technologies could cost India an estimated $270 billion by 2035 and up to $1 trillion by 2047 in lost manufacturing GDP opportunities. The roadmap thus calls for coordinated action between government, industry, and academia to ensure India captures its historic opportunity to lead the next wave of global manufacturing.
