Indian Naval Ship INS Sahyadri welcomed a group of Japanese schoolchildren aboard during its port call at Yokosuka, highlighting India’s maritime heritage and growing defence partnership with Japan.

The visit aimed to deepen cultural understanding and showcase India’s progress in indigenous naval technology.

According to the Indian Navy’s spokesperson, the students explored the Shivalik-class Guided Missile Stealth Frigate, learning about India’s long maritime history and modern shipbuilding capabilities. Commissioned in 2012, INS Sahyadri, commanded by Captain Rajat Kumar, represents India’s self-reliance in defence under the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative.

The vessel arrived in Japan’s Sasebo port earlier this week to participate in the Japan-India Maritime Exercise (JAIMEX-25) alongside the Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force (JMSDF). The two navies have conducted professional exchanges, operational planning discussions, and cross-deck visits during the harbour phase of the exercise.

A special combined yoga session was also held, promoting friendship and teamwork between personnel of both nations. The event, shared widely on social media, reflected mutual respect and cooperation beyond military ties.

During his visit, Captain Kumar met Rear Admiral Yamaguchi Nobohisa, Chief of Staff of the Yokosuka district of JMSDF, and other local dignitaries, including Rear Admiral Kondo Shuji of the Coast Guard and Chief of Police Kobayashi Hitoshi. Their talks focused on improving interoperability, joint training, and maritime coordination to ensure a free, open, and secure Indo-Pacific.

The visit of INS Sahyadri symbolizes the growing strength of India-Japan strategic ties, blending diplomacy, defence, and cultural outreach on the high seas.
