Pakistan Cricket Board Set to Sack Women’s Team Coach after WC Exit: Report

Lahore

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is reportedly set to sack women’s national team head coach Muhammad Wasim following the team’s dismal performance at the ongoing Women’s ODI World Cup in India. Pakistan failed to win a single game in the tournament, finishing seventh out of eight teams, and could drop to the bottom if Bangladesh win their final group match.

According to sources within the PCB, Chairman Mohsin Naqvi was deeply disappointed by the team’s lack of progress under Wasim’s tenure, particularly in the batting department. “Wasim was appointed with high expectations, but the results and player development have been underwhelming,” a PCB official told local media.

Appointed last year, the former Pakistan batter’s stint has been marred by inconsistency and internal discontent. During his tenure, Pakistan exited the 2023 Asia Cup at the semifinal stage after losing to Sri Lanka and managed just one win from four matches at the Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa earlier this year.

Despite Wasim’s background as a top-order batter, the national team’s batting woes have persisted, with frequent collapses and low totals in key matches. Reports also suggest that several players and staff members raised concerns about Wasim’s leadership style, describing him as “unapproachable” and difficult to work with.

The PCB has decided against renewing Wasim’s contract, which expires at the end of the month. An official announcement regarding his replacement is expected in the coming days, with the board reportedly exploring options for a foreign coach to lead the team’s rebuilding phase.

The decision signals the PCB’s intent to overhaul the women’s cricket setup after another disappointing global campaign.
