Over 60 hospitalised over suspected food poisoning in Gujarat

Surendranagar

Over 60 people, including women and children, were hospitalised after a suspected case of food poisoning in Gomta village of Gujarat’s Surendranagar district. The incident took place on Saturday night after residents consumed buttermilk served during a house Vastu ceremony.

Soon after the meal, several villagers began complaining of vomiting, diarrhoea, and stomach pain. They were rushed to hospitals in Limbdi and Wadhwan for treatment. Health officials and local authorities reached the village immediately to assess the situation and monitor the patients.

Taluka Health Officer Jayesh Vaghela said, “More than 60 people suffered food poisoning after a festive meal in Gomta village. All are under medical supervision, and their condition is stable.” Samples of the buttermilk have been sent for laboratory testing to identify the cause of contamination.

The district Health Department has launched an inquiry and is closely tracking the recovery of patients. Officials expressed relief that most victims are now improving.

The Gujarat government has been strengthening its food safety measures to prevent such incidents. In 2024–25, the Food and Drug Control Administration (FDCA) tested over 60,000 food samples, finding 1.45 per cent below quality standards and 0.17 per cent unsafe for consumption.

Under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, the state filed 980 adjudication cases, collecting over Rs 6.7 crore in fines from violators. Authorities continue to conduct raids, seize unsafe food items, and raise public awareness about hygiene and safe food handling during community events.
