The Mining Department has issued a notice to former Union Minister and ex-BJP MP from Bidar, Bhagwant Khooba, to pay a fine of Rs 25.30 crore for illegal mining in Vaccha village of Kalagi taluk.
The charges relate to the period from July 19, 2014, to July 18, 2019. A complaint was filed against Khooba by Sanjeev Kumar Tippanna Jawarka, alleging that Khooba had permission to mine only two acres in survey number 24/4 of Vaccha village but carried out mining in a much larger area.
Following the complaint, a joint inspection by the Mining Department and the Kalagi Tehsildar confirmed that illegal mining had taken place. Based on the inspection reports, the department issued notices to Khooba three times, demanding payment of the Rs 25.30 crore fine.
It is reported that Khooba has challenged the notices in court, seeking relief from the imposed penalties. The case has drawn attention due to Khooba’s former position as a Union Minister and a senior political leader.
The Mining Department has been strict in enforcing regulations to prevent illegal extraction of minerals and protect public resources. Officials said such actions serve as a warning to others involved in unauthorised mining activities.
The court proceedings are expected to determine whether Khooba will have to pay the fine or if the notices will be overturned. Meanwhile, the department continues to monitor mining activities in the region to ensure compliance with existing laws.
