The Chitradurga District Police Department observed Police Martyrs’ Day on Tuesday at the District Armed Reserve Police Grounds to honor the brave personnel who laid down their lives in the line of duty. Additional Deputy Commissioner B.T. Kumaraswamy, who attended the event as chief guest, said that it is because of the dedication and discipline of police personnel that citizens are able to live peaceful and secure lives.
Paying floral tributes at the martyrs’ memorial, Kumaraswamy said police officers play a crucial role in safeguarding the nation internally, just as soldiers protect it on the borders. He commended their commitment to duty, often performed by sacrificing family life and personal safety. He also urged citizens to respect the law, avoid conflicts, and cooperate with law enforcement in building a law-abiding and harmonious society.
Superintendent of Police Ranjit Kumar Bandaru recalled the historic bravery of ten CRPF personnel led by DSP Karan Singh, who died fighting a surprise attack by Chinese troops near Hot Springs in Ladakh on October 21, 1959. Their supreme sacrifice inspired the nation to observe this day annually as Police Martyrs’ Day.
Bandaru said that between September 2024 and August 2025, a total of 191 police officers and staff across India, including eight from Karnataka, lost their lives in the line of duty. Their names were read out and honored during the ceremony.
The event concluded with floral tributes, a ceremonial gun salute, and the national anthem performed by the police band. Senior officials, journalists, lawyers, doctors, and citizens participated to pay homage to the fallen heroes.
