Chief Minister Siddaramaiah inaugurated a major infrastructure upgrade project in Bengaluru’s Gandhinagar Assembly constituency, marking the beginning of extensive white-topping work and the modernisation of Chickpet Road, one of the city’s busiest commercial stretches.
The initiative, approved by Bangalore Smart Infrastructure Limited (BANGSCL), is part of the government’s broader effort to strengthen urban mobility and improve road durability across Bengaluru. White-topping, a process that involves resurfacing asphalt roads with concrete for enhanced longevity, is being implemented in several areas of the city as part of ongoing civic upgrades.
During the foundation-laying ceremony, the Chief Minister emphasised that the white-topping and modernisation of Chickpet will not only improve road quality but also boost trade and tourism in the area. “Chickpet is one of Bengaluru’s oldest and most vibrant markets. Its modernisation will preserve its historical importance while supporting better traffic management and pedestrian safety,” Siddaramaiah said.
Officials stated that the project will include better drainage systems, improved lighting, pedestrian-friendly pathways, and upgraded utility infrastructure. The white-topping of Chickpet Road is expected to reduce recurring maintenance costs and enhance commuter experience in the central business district.
BANGSCL has identified multiple key corridors under Bengaluru Central Corporation (CCC) for similar works aimed at decongesting traffic and ensuring safer road conditions. These projects are being implemented in phases to minimise public inconvenience while maintaining access for businesses and residents.
The government has also assured that traffic diversions and project timelines will be clearly communicated to the public. With the launch of the Gandhinagar and Chickpet modernisation works, Bengaluru’s civic authorities are hopeful of setting new standards in sustainable and long-lasting infrastructure development for India’s tech capital.
