Raichur
Farmers in Raichur have appealed to the district administration to provide adequate compensation after continuous rains destroyed their guava, papaya, and peral crops. The affected cultivators submitted a memorandum to officials following a protest in front of the new Deputy Commissioner’s office in the city.
Last month’s heavy and unrelenting rainfall severely damaged a variety of horticultural crops. Farmers reported that flowers on papaya, guava, and peral trees were completely washed away. Although the investment per acre may seem modest, many had spent up to Rs 4.5 lakh, resulting in total losses running into several lakhs of rupees. The destruction has left farmers burdened with debt and financial uncertainty.
The protesting farmers emphasized that they pay crop insurance premiums annually, yet the government often delays or withholds insurance payouts. This year, the state has officially declared Rayachuru a crop-loss-affected district, and the farmers demanded immediate release of adequate compensation to cover their losses.
Representatives from various horticultural sectors participated in the protest, urging authorities to take swift action to prevent further distress and to support the livelihoods of those dependent on these crops. The farmers’ collective appeal underscores the urgent need for timely government intervention to mitigate losses and restore confidence among the district’s cultivators.
