KV Prabhakar shares three mantras to nurture children’s creativity

Bengaluru

KV Prabhakar, Media Advisor to the Chief Minister, emphasized three essential principles for fostering creativity in children: spark curiosity, provide opportunities, and recognize and encourage talent. Speaking at the Chinnara Jagruti Award Ceremony organized by the Press Club and Bal Bhavan, he highlighted how these steps help children unlock their innate potential.

Prabhakar noted that every child is born with inherent abilities. “When a child’s mind and imagination are nurtured, their talent naturally emerges. No one needs to create a talented child; the right environment is enough,” he said. He compared encouragement and recognition to greasing a cartwheel—just as the wheel moves smoothly with lubrication, a child’s abilities flourish with motivation and awards.

Addressing the award-winning children, Prabhakar urged them to maintain curiosity and a love for learning throughout life. He warned against overuse of mobile phones and tablets, which can suppress creativity, and criticized violent video games for fostering aggression instead of imagination. “Put aside the gadgets, pick up books, and step into open spaces,” he said.

He recalled Jawaharlal Nehru’s vision behind establishing Bal Bhavan, noting its role in shaping children’s perspectives and preparing them to contribute to the nation’s future. Prabhakar expressed concern that modern children are increasingly detached from nature and traditional storytelling, which historically nurtured imagination.

Prabhakar appreciated the collaboration between Bal Bhavan and the Press Club, which encourages children to expand their creative and mental horizons. The event was attended by dignitaries including BDA President N.A. Harris, Press Club President Sridhar, actor-director Arun Sagar, Bal Bhavan President B.R. Naidu, and officials from the Women and Child Welfare Department, alongside folk artist Picchalli Srinivas and singer Akbar.
