Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has sparked political controversy by questioning the need to spend money on lighting diyas and candles during Diwali. His comments on Saturday prompted sharp criticism from BJP leaders, who accused him of disrespecting Hindu traditions and showing contempt for Indian culture.
Yadav had said that cities worldwide are illuminated during Christmas for months and questioned why similar spending on diyas and candles is necessary. He suggested the government rethink its approach and ensure “more stunning lights” in the future.
BJP national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi condemned the remarks, calling them “highly disrespectful” to Diwali and Sanatan traditions. He highlighted the Prajapati community, whose livelihood depends on making lamps, saying that diyas symbolize light and prosperity. Union Minister Giriraj Singh and Maharashtra MLA Ram Kadam also criticized Yadav, pointing to the spiritual significance of lighting lamps in Hindu tradition and linking it to Lord Ram’s return to Ayodhya.
BJP leaders accused Yadav of ignoring India’s cultural values for political motives. Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said festivals have their own significance and should not be compared, while Tarun Chugh referenced past incidents under Yadav’s government in Uttar Pradesh, calling his remarks inconsistent with the reverence for Lord Ram.
Other leaders, including Gulam Ali Khatana and Madhya Pradesh Minister Vishvas Sarang, called on the SP chief to speak responsibly. Sarang said Yadav has consistently disrespected Hindu culture and traditions, even attempting to introduce Namaz on Diwali. BJP leaders emphasized that such statements hurt cultural sentiments and affect the livelihoods of thousands who depend on Diwali celebrations.
