Some nations openly violating global norms: Def Min

New Delhi

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday said some countries are openly violating international rules, while others aim to set their own norms and dominate the coming century. Speaking at a conference of military chiefs from nations contributing to UN peacekeeping missions, Singh did not name the countries but stressed that India strongly supports upholding a rules-based international order.

He highlighted the need to reform outdated multilateral institutions, including the UN. “We cannot tackle today’s challenges with structures designed for the past. Without comprehensive reforms, the UN faces a crisis of confidence,” he said, adding that the world needs a reformed multilateral system for today’s interconnected challenges.

Singh also praised India’s contribution to UN peacekeeping missions. Over 2,90,000 Indian personnel have served in more than 50 missions, with over 180 sacrificing their lives. “From Congo and Korea to South Sudan and Lebanon, our soldiers, police, and medical professionals have stood alongside the international community to protect the vulnerable and rebuild societies,” he said, honouring their courage and selflessness.
