India’s telecom sector set for major growth

New Delhi

India’s telecom sector is expected to raise its contribution to the national GDP from 12–14 per cent to nearly 20 per cent in the next decade, said Union Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region Jyotiraditya Scindia. He was speaking at the Nation Builders Summit during the India Mobile Congress 2025.

Scindia said the government now acts as a “facilitator rather than a regulator,” allowing the industry to innovate freely in a highly competitive environment. Calling this a “defining decade for India,” he urged companies to think globally by “designing in India, solving in India, and scaling for the world.”

He announced that India has successfully developed its own 4G technology stack, becoming the fifth nation worldwide to do so, completing it in just 20 months. BSNL will soon expand its 4G services and upgrade them to 5G.

Highlighting India’s digital transformation, Scindia said the nation now has 1.2 billion mobile users — 20 per cent of the world’s total. Internet subscriptions have grown from 250 million in 2014 to 974 million today, and broadband connections have jumped from 60 million to 944 million.

He praised the government’s digital push under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which he described as creating “the world’s largest digital highway.” Scindia also noted the rise of entrepreneurs in smaller towns, reflecting a shift from big-city dominance to broader participation.

He added that India, once unable to produce chips, is now building semiconductor factories from Gujarat to Assam, marking a new industrial revolution.
