Anthropic, an artificial intelligence company backed by Google and Amazon, announced plans to open its first office in India next year, choosing Bengaluru as its hub. The move comes as India’s AI market experiences rapid growth, driven by rising technology adoption, a skilled workforce, and strong investor interest.

India, with nearly a billion internet users, has become a crucial market for AI companies. Anthropic’s chatbot, Claude, which competes with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and is known for advanced coding capabilities, sees India as its second-largest market. Currently, Claude is offered in free and paid versions in India, although pricing in Indian currency has not yet been introduced. Co-founder and CEO Dario Amodei is scheduled to visit India this week to meet government officials and corporate partners.

The Bengaluru office, slated to start operations in early 2026, will be Anthropic’s second Asia-Pacific location after Tokyo. The company’s expansion follows a plan to triple its international workforce to meet growing demand for Claude outside the United States.

Anthropic faces stiff competition in India from OpenAI, which plans to open its first office in New Delhi later this year, along with other AI rivals like Google’s Gemini and startup Perplexity, which offer free advanced AI tools for Indian users.

By establishing a base in Bengaluru, Anthropic aims to strengthen its presence in the country, tap local talent, and compete directly in the rapidly evolving AI landscape, signaling India’s growing significance in the global AI race.
