AI-Based App Introduced for PU Staff Attendance

Koppal

A pilot version of the Karnataka Attendance Management System (KAMS), powered by AI, has been launched in four Pre-University (PU) colleges. Developed by the state-run e-Administration Centre, the Android-based app uses AI-driven facial recognition and GPS technology to verify employees’ attendance. The app has been rolled out for staff in PU colleges in Bengaluru South, Haveri, Koppal, and Mandya. Following training sessions on September 19, the Department of School Education (Pre-University) instructed staff from these districts to record attendance through KAMS.

Staff are required to open the app upon reaching their college, select the Check-In button and shift time, take a selfie, and submit the image with GPS coordinates, date, and time. The same procedure applies during check-out. Rajasekhar Patil, Principal of Government PU College, Kinnal, said the app is user-friendly and ensures clear verification.

With KAMS, unauthorized attendance or skipping classes is eliminated, as employees must check in and out from the college premises. Previously, the state and aided PU colleges used the Aadhaar-enabled Biometric Attendance System (BAS), which relied on fingerprint scans.

In March 2025, the state government announced KAMS as a replacement for the biometric system, highlighting its facial recognition, geofencing, and real-time monitoring features. Authorities assured staff that all data would remain securely stored in the state database and not be shared externally.
