Pakistan intensifies crackdown on dissent

Islamabad

A government ad has caused anger among press freedom and human rights groups. The ad, published by the Ministry of Information on October 1 and 2 in major newspapers, warned that modern warfare uses information instead of weapons. It claimed that enemies might appear as journalists, NGO workers, or freelancers, who could spread fear by leaking sensitive information. The Freedom Network, a media watchdog, strongly criticised the ad, saying it puts media and civil society workers at risk and harms press freedom.
