RG Kar victim’s parents demand justice movement revival

The victim’s father vowed to continue the fight for justice, urging public support and mass movements without politics

Kolkata

As West Bengal’s four-day Durga Puja concluded without protests over the R.G. Kar rape and murder case, the parents of the victim urged a revival of the mass movement until “justice is attained.” They stressed that protests must continue not only for their daughter’s justice but also to protect future “Durgas” from similar tragedies.

The victim’s mother emotionally appealed, “Influential people were behind the immersion of my ‘Durga’. Those responsible for her untimely immersion are enjoying the festival. I appeal to the people to join the celebrations but never forget the pain of Durgas like my daughter. Especially, never forget the Durga of the R.G. Kar.”

Last year, Durga Puja in Kolkata was marked by spontaneous protests and street demonstrations following the brutal rape and murder of a junior doctor inside R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital premises. This year, however, the festival returned to its usual vibrant atmosphere with crowded pandals, music, and festivities, without major protests demanding justice for the victim, affectionately called “Abhaya” or “Tilottoma.”

The victim’s father stressed the need to intensify the struggle. “We are on the path of battle for justice. Our fight will continue. We know it is an uneven contest due to the influence of those behind this conspiracy. We need public support. We want mass movements again on this issue and no politics involved,” he said, reaffirming their determination to pursue justice both in court and on the streets.

Their call highlights the enduring pain and demand for accountability, even as the city returns to festivity, showing that the tragedy’s shadow still lingers in public conscience.
