Rahul Gandhi honors Kamaraj’s legacy of service

Chennai

On the death anniversary of Bharat Ratna K. Kamaraj, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi paid tribute to the late leader, praising his life of service, humility, and dedication to education and social justice. Gandhi said Kamaraj’s work continues to inspire generations.

Kamaraj served as Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister from 1954 to 1963 and is seen as the architect of the state’s modern education and welfare system. Born in humble circumstances, he left school early but devoted his life to ensuring all children could access education.

Under his leadership, thousands of schools were built, free uniforms given to students, and the mid-day meal scheme strengthened. This helped increase school attendance and reduce dropouts. Kamaraj believed education could break poverty cycles and also supported balanced industrial and agricultural growth to strengthen Tamil Nadu’s economy.

Known for his honesty, simplicity, and clean politics, Kamaraj avoided luxuries and worked without seeking personal gain. His integrity earned respect across political lines.

Beyond the state, as Congress president, Kamaraj guided the party after the deaths of Jawaharlal Nehru and Lal Bahadur Shastri, earning the title “Kingmaker” for his ability to mediate and prioritise national interest.

More than fifty years after his passing, Kamaraj’s ideals remain relevant. Rahul Gandhi’s tribute reflects the enduring value of Kamaraj’s vision — that leadership must serve the poorest and ensure justice, equality, and progress for all.
