Nepal’s newly-appointed Prime Minister Sushila Karki on Monday reaffirmed her interim government’s commitment to holding general elections as scheduled, the Himalayan Times reported. Karki, 73, assumed office on September 12 after days of political turmoil following the ouster of former Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli. His removal came amid violent protests led by a youth Gen Z group over corruption allegations and a social media ban.
On the occasion of Bada Dashain — one of Nepal’s most celebrated Hindu festivals — Karki extended greetings to citizens at home and abroad, and assured that elections for the House of Representatives will be held on time.
President Ramchandra Paudel also appealed for calm and urged support for the continuity of government and parliament. “Let the scheduled election be held on time… so that problems facing the nation can be resolved and the welfare of the entire nation achieved,” he said, invoking blessings from Goddess Durga.
Earlier this month, Karki met Paudel to discuss election preparations. Following the meeting, Paudel issued an ordinance amending the voter registration act, enabling new voters to be registered ahead of the March 2026 general election. Acting on Karki’s recommendation, Paudel dissolved the House of Representatives and set March 5, 2026, as the date for fresh polls.
Nepal currently has 1.82 crore eligible voters for the upcoming elections.
