KDA Demands Sonam Wangchuk’s Release, Criticises Centre

KDA urges immediate release of activist Sonam Wangchuk and other youth leaders, citing rising alienation over Ladakh’s statehood and constitutional demands.

 New Delhi

The Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) on Monday demanded the immediate and unconditional release of activist Sonam Wangchuk and other youth leaders detained following the September 24 violence in Leh. The group warned that the Centre’s failure to address Ladakh’s statehood and constitutional demands is alienating the region’s people.

Addressing a press conference, KDA member Sajjad Kargili called for Wangchuk’s release from a Jodhpur jail, where he is held under the National Security Act. He stressed that the demands for statehood and Sixth Schedule safeguards are non-negotiable and warned that the current treatment of Ladakhis increases feelings of insecurity and alienation.

Kargili criticised the Union Territory administration for its handling of the Leh unrest, citing the firing on protesters and injuries sustained by many. He questioned why preventive measures were not taken despite prior intelligence and demanded accountability from the authorities, calling for an impartial judicial probe.

Highlighting Wangchuk’s arrest, he noted that the issue of Ladakh’s rights has gained nationwide attention, predicting protests across India. He reiterated that dialogue with the Union Government followed public protests and emphasised that Ladakh’s people should not be sidelined or distracted by festivals.

Kargili argued that the Union Territory setup has failed to meet the aspirations of Ladakhis and that protecting their tribal identity and ensuring genuine democratic participation remain core, non-negotiable demands. He urged the government to act wisely, respect the region’s demands, and avoid further alienation of the people.
