Udupi
A passionate cyclist from Hallihole near Kamalashile in Kundapur, Dinesh Bovi, triumphantly returned to Udupi after completing an extraordinary 3,300-kilometer bicycle journey to Ladakh, undertaken to advocate for environmental preservation.
The 11-month expedition, which traversed eight states, culminated in a heartfelt felicitation ceremony at Milagres College, Kalyanpur, his former institution, attended by Malpe PSI Anil Kumar, retired professors, alumni representatives, and members of the teachers’ association.
Dinesh embarked on his ambitious ride on October 15, 2024, reaching the rugged terrains of Ladakh by September 2025. The journey, originally planned for a shorter duration, extended to 330 days due to road closures in Kashmir that posed logistical challenges.
Covering diverse landscapes and climates, Dinesh’s mission was to raise awareness about sustainable living and environmental stewardship, a message he carried through bustling cities and remote villages alike.
The ride was estimated to cost ₹1.5 lakh, which was made possible through contributions from donors and the Milagres College alumni network, with Principal Vincent Alva playing a pivotal role in coordinating support and providing a bicycle tailored for the grueling trip.
An unexpected companion, a rescued dog named Charlie, joined Dinesh at the Karnataka-Goa border and remarkably completed the 326-day trek by his side, becoming a symbol of resilience and loyalty.
A seasoned adventurer with prior long-distance walks and cycling feats, Dinesh attributed his success to the encouragement from Alva and the steadfast support of his family. The celebration at Milagres College highlighted his commitment to environmental causes, with attendees lauding his ability to inspire communities across India to prioritize ecological conservation through his remarkable journey.
