Drones spotted near Skrydstrup, Jutland Dragoon, and possibly Karup Air Base; airspace closures affected no civilian flights
Copenhagen
Danish defense officials have reported multiple drone sightings over key military sites, sparking growing security concerns in Northern Europe. The incidents occurred overnight Friday and followed similar drone activity earlier in the week that caused temporary shutdowns of Danish airports.
The drones were seen near Skrydstrup Air Base and the Jutland Dragoon Regiment. Reports also mentioned drones flying around Karup Air Base, Denmark’s largest military base, though the defense ministry did not confirm this for security reasons. At times, airspace near Karup was closed, though it affected no civilian flights as there is currently no civil aviation there.
These repeated unexplained drone flights have raised fears of possible hostile actions amid worries about increasing Russian aggression in the region. Denmark’s Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard called the flyovers attempts to create fear and division, promising new measures to neutralize drones, including legislation allowing infrastructure owners to shoot them down. Ahead of the upcoming EU summit, Denmark accepted Sweden’s offer to provide military anti-drone support.
Neighboring Germany has also seen drone sightings in Schleswig-Holstein, near the Danish border. German police are increasing drone defense efforts, according to the state’s interior minister, Sabine Sütterlin-Waack. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz warned that while the country is not at war, it is no longer fully at peace due to ongoing attacks on infrastructure and public safety.
The tense situation highlights concerns over espionage, sabotage, cyberattacks, and violent acts like the 2019 “Tiergarten murder,” deepening worries about stability in Europe.
