‘India set to produce 5MMT of green hydrogen by 2030’

Nineteen companies have secured green hydrogen projects totaling 900 KTPA, as India ranks third in energy use and oil imports, fourth in refining

New Delhi

India is stepping into a new era of green hydrogen, aiming to produce 5 million metric tonnes (MMT) annually by 2030, said Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri on Saturday. This move is expected to lower the cost of green hydrogen from $3.50 to $3 per kilogram, saving India about $150 billion in imports.

Puri shared on social media platform X that public sector units plan to reach 1 MMT capacity by 2030. The number of tenders for green hydrogen projects will grow from 42 kilo tonnes per annum (KTPA) to 170 KTPA. He added that India is aiming to capture 10% of the global hydrogen market under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.

So far, 19 companies have been awarded green hydrogen projects with a combined capacity of around 900 KTPA. The minister also pointed out that India is the world’s third-largest energy consumer, third-largest crude oil importer, and fourth-largest refiner.

India has large reserves, with 651.8 MMT of crude oil and 1,138.6 billion cubic meters of natural gas, giving the country many untapped energy opportunities, Puri said.

The government is encouraging investment through fiscal incentives and simpler policies to boost energy production. Over the past decade, reforms like the shift from the new exploration licensing policy (NELP) to the hydrocarbon exploration and licensing policy (HELP) have helped grow the sector.

The Open Acreage Licensing Policy (OALP) Round X was the largest-ever, offering 1.92 lakh sq km for exploration. Investments of Rs 1.4 lakh crore have supported major growth, with 578 wells drilled in the last year — the highest by ONGC in 35 years — and over 5,000 exploratory and development wells completed.

India is ready to unlock its full energy potential and play a major role in the global energy transition.
