Coal PSUs announce ₹1.03 lakh reward for workers

New Delhi
Coal public sector undertakings (PSUs) have announced a performance-linked reward (PLR) of ₹1,03,000 each for non-executive employees, the Ministry of Coal said on Friday. The benefit will reach around 2.1 lakh workers of Coal India Limited (CIL) and its subsidiaries, along with nearly 38,000 non-executive staff at Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL).

The decision, finalised in the sixth meeting of the standardisation committee of the Joint Bipartite Committee for the Coal Industry, will have a financial impact of ₹2,153.82 crore for CIL and ₹380 crore for SCCL. Payments will be credited on a pro rata basis depending on attendance.

According to the ministry, the move recognises the dedication of non-executive employees, who form the backbone of mining operations. The PLR is aimed at boosting morale, productivity, and job satisfaction, while providing financial relief to families ahead of the festive season.

Officials added that this step reflects CIL’s commitment to worker welfare and the government’s goal of creating an Aatmanirbhar Bharat. Non-executive workers are considered vital to sustaining coal supply and strengthening the country’s energy security.

The ministry also pointed to recent GST reforms that eliminated the ₹400 per tonne compensation cess on coal, even as GST on coal was raised from 5% to 18%. Officials said the overall effect has lowered the tax burden on final consumers, corrected distortions in pricing, and improved liquidity for producers.

By linking rewards to performance, the government hopes to encourage efficiency and ensure workers receive fair recognition for their contribution to the sector’s growth.
