With five matches left, Miami is third in the East with 55 points, aiming for home-field advantage and their first-ever MLS Cup title
New York
Lionel Messi once again proved unstoppable, scoring twice and providing an assist as Inter Miami thrashed New York City FC 4-0 at Citi Field. The win confirmed Miami’s place in the MLS Cup Playoffs for a third straight season. Baltasar Rodríguez and Luis Suárez added the other goals in a dominant display.
With five matches left, Miami stand third in the Eastern Conference with 55 points (16 wins, 6 losses, 7 draws). The reigning Supporters’ Shield holders are in strong position to secure home-field advantage for their opening playoff series as they chase a first-ever MLS Cup.
The club has already booked a place in the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup after reaching the Leagues Cup final this year. Earlier in 2025, they also advanced to the knockout rounds of the FIFA Club World Cup, marking another milestone.
Messi’s personal form remains exceptional. He leads the league with 37 goal contributions—24 goals and 13 assists in just 23 matches. This makes him the first player in MLS history to surpass 35 goal contributions in consecutive seasons. Wednesday’s brace was also his eighth multi-goal game of the campaign, tying him with Josef Martínez and Zlatan Ibrahimović for third-most in a season, just behind Carlos Vela’s record of 49.
The Argentine superstar is now a strong contender to become the first player to win back-to-back MLS MVP awards, while also chasing the Golden Boot.
Inter Miami will aim to extend their winning streak when they travel to face Toronto FC at BMO Field this Saturday.
