Thalapathy Vijay’s 2017 income tax dispute explained

The Madras High Court has postponed actor Vijay’s income tax case, which involves a ₹1.50 crore fine for alleged income concealment during the 2016–17 financial year. The next hearing is scheduled for October 10, and the court has asked Vijay’s team to submit additional documents.

Vijay is challenging the penalty, arguing that the Income Tax Department issued the order after the legal deadline. His lawyers pointed out that the penalty should have been imposed by June 30, 2019, but the department issued it only on June 30, 2022, making the fine invalid. The Income Tax Department, however, stated that the fine was imposed according to the law and that there was no error in its order.

The dispute arose from Vijay’s declared income of ₹35.42 crore for the 2016–17 financial year. During a 2015 investigation, the department alleged that ₹15 crore he received for the film Puli was not included in his returns, leading to the ₹1.50 crore penalty. Vijay filed a case in 2022 to quash the order, and the court had granted an interim injunction at the time.

On the film front, Vijay is set to appear in Jana Nayagan, directed by H. Vinoth, a political entertainer scheduled for release on January 9, 2026. After this film, Vijay plans to retire from acting and focus on his political career. Despite the ongoing legal proceedings, the actor continues to balance his film projects and political engagements.
